Arrival
The instructional day begins at 7:40 and ends at 2:55. If your child arrives after 7:40, he/she will be counted tardy. After the first week, school policy will be enforced: "Children can only be escorted to the entrance of the first grade hallway."
Birthdays
We will celebrate your child's birthday if it falls on a school day. They will receive a birthday crown and a pencil. If you would like to send in non-edible items for the entire class, please contact the teacher for details about the number of students and these goodies will be distributed at the end of the day. Because of serious food allergies and not wanting any child to feel excluded in a celebration, we will not celebrate birthdays with any kind of foods or snacks. Thank you!
Book Orders
At certain times during the school year, book orders will be sent home. If you are ordering books, please order online. Please do not send checks to school. Please see the Scholastic Reading Club tab under the "more" tab.
Curriculum
Please see Writing, Reading, Math, Social Studies, & Science sections.
Dismissal
Please make sure that your child's teacher is always aware of your child's route of transportation to and from school. If any changes arise, please call the front office at (512)704-0500 or submit a transportation change on the Teravista website. I have few opportunities to read emails throughout the day. The office will deliver the message to me about your child's transportation change. Otherwise, your child will be sent home in the normal fashion. Children can often misunderstand a situation, so a child's verbal transportation change will not be excepted. Further details regarding arrival and dismissal procedures are explained in the Teravista Elementary Parent Handbook.
Daily Binder
Your child will take their Daily Binder home daily. Inside the Binder, your child will keep his/her calendar. Please review the calendar regarding your child’s day, initial, and have your child return their binder daily. This folder is the main tool used for communication between school and home. Please take a minute to look through it and familiarize yourself with its contents.
Your child's work as well as other important documents that require you to provide information and/or a signature (i.e. permission slips, Field Trip forms) will be sent home with your child in the binder as well. Unless information is provided for all the students, I will not place any items from home in a child’s folder (i.e. birthday invitations).
Field Trips
Field trips will be announced at a later date and time. Please take the time to visit the Round Rock website to have a background check performed in order to volunteer at school or field trip events.
Gym (P.E.)
Our class will have P.E. (gym) class on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The children are asked to wear athletic shoes on gym days (no slip on shoes). If your child cannot participate in PE activities because of illness or injury, please send a note with your child to take to PE explaining the situation to our coaches.
Homework
Your child will be asked to read regularly for 20 minutes each night. Please use this activity as an opportunity to spend quality time with your child.
Handbooks
Please be sure to read the Round Rock I.S.D. Handbook and the Teravista Handbook. At the end of the handbook is a form to be signed by you and your child. Please do so after discussing the material with your child and have your child return it to their teacher in their blue Daily Folder. Thanks for your promptness in returning these!
Independence
Independence is a goal for students because it builds self-esteem and self-confidence. 1st Graders are very capable of doing many things on their own and all of our teachers encourage them to do as much as they can for themselves in the classroom. Please work on the following self-help skills at home with your child: zipping, tying, dressing, etc.
Journals
Writing takes place every day in 1st Grade. One way we accomplish this is through writing stories in their journals and writing folders during Writer’s Workshop. Encourage your child to write at home as well.
Keep updated by visiting our Seesaw class account and reading emails from me often, checking the school website, and checking your child's daily binder every day for notes and information.
Leaving Early for Appointments, etc.
If you need to pick your child up early, please have your child (or you may also) send a note to the office, preferably prior to the start of the school day. The note should contain the following information:
